One of the best beaches in Lyme Regis, Monmouth Beach is beloved by dog walkers, locals, and holidaymakers. Located to the west of the harbour, this shingle beach stretches a kilometre from the Cobb<\/a> wall.<\/p>\n

The beach is named after the Duke of Monmouth who landed here in 1685, as part of a failed rebellion against his uncle King James II. Now, the picturesque beach and its row of iconic beach huts is the perfect place to wander, paddle and sit to admire the sunset over Lyme Bay.<\/p>\n

Swimming & Water Sports<\/h2>\n

Swimming and water sports are permitted at the beach year-round. However, it\u2019s advised to take caution when swimming as the beach is rocky, and shelves steeply down to the sea. There can also be strong undercurrents, so children need to be supervised at all times. Water shoes or waterproof sandals are a good idea if you\u2019re planning to swim here, as the beach and sea floor is uneven and stony.<\/p>\n

There is a lifeguard station near the beach, next to the Cobb from the 8th<\/sup> of July to the 3rd<\/sup> of September, from 10 AM until 6 PM.<\/p>\n

Fossil Hunting<\/h2>\n

Monmouth Beach, and its famous \u2018ammonite pavement\u2019, is one of the best places to go fossil hunting in and around Lyme Regis. If you\u2019re lucky, you may even find a small ammonite fossil to take home with you! It\u2019s important to remember though, that whilst searching for fossils on the beach is permitted, you must never dig in the cliffs for fossils as it can be dangerous and destabilise the soil.<\/p>\n

If you want a little help knowing where to look for fossils, the Lyme Regis Museum leads guided fossil walks<\/a> on the beach. Tickets cost \u00a314.75 for adults and \u00a38.75 for children.<\/p>\n

Areas of Monmouth Beach can become inaccessible at high tide, so it\u2019s crucial to check the Lyme Regis tide times<\/a> before you visit. The BBC Weather website<\/a> is a reliable source of information on the latest local tide times.<\/p>\n

Monmouth Beach Car Park<\/h2>\n

There are two pay-and-display car parks, Monmouth Beach Car Park and Cabanya Car Park. These carp parks offer parking for 282 cars, including disabled spaces, and are just a two-minute walk from the beach. They get busy in summer, so it\u2019s best to arrive earlier if you plan to visit in peak times.<\/p>\n

Dogs are allowed off the lead, all year round on Monmouth Beach. It\u2019s the ideal place to stroll with your pup and let them paddle in the sea.<\/p>\n

Just behind Monmouth Beach, next to the car park, is the access point for the Undercliff National Nature Cliff Reserve<\/a>, which stretches from Lyme Regis to Axmouth in Devon. You can walk for 7 miles through the otherworldly, forested landscape via the South West Coast Path<\/a>.<\/p>\n
