“A wonderful family holiday in this beautiful, peaceful cottage.”

Everything was of a high standard. The kitchen was especially well equipped, with everything of a high spec. The lounge and dining area were comfortable for everyone in our family. The bedrooms were of a good size and the beds were very comfortable. The two bathrooms were also a good size with good quality towels. The Rousden estate is beautiful and we loved our walks with the dogs and our granddaughter, who enjoyed riding on her scooter in safety around the grounds. Very easy to get to Lyme ...

The Rousden estate is beautiful and we loved our walks with the dogs and our granddaughter, who enjoyed riding on her scooter in safety around the grounds. Very easy to get to Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Seaton, Beer, Axminster, but tucked away from hustle bustle. The entrance to the estate is very impressive and the grounds are beautifully maintained. We have had many holidays in cottages over the years, but can honestly say The Engine House was the best.

“Very stylish and comfortable.”

Would definitely recommend to anyone. People with reduced mobility (downstairs is perfect - no steps) people with a dog (basket, bowls, covers for sofas) and families with a child (bath toys, stair gates etc) Everything was sparkly clean and excellent quality. It would be helpful to have some J cloths and washing up liquid for the occasional hand washing up and work surface cleaning. Also, the beautiful upstairs bathroom does need a mat under the bath as the lovely pine planking allows splashing from the shower, which has to be handheld while sitting down, to keep through the floor. We used the downstairs shower for that reason. The area is beautifully quiet and parking is right by the door for 2 good size cars. Lyme Regis is only a 10 minute drive and the shops and independent cafés are well worth a visit, also the fossil museum next to the sea. We ate at The Rock Fish restaurant which is located above the cob - a 5 minute walk uphill. Fabulous views from all tables and fish caught that day. Bridport is well worth a visit too.

“The house was lovely and well appointed.”

It's in a collection of a good number of houses on a large estate through a gate which looks private. It's a lovely place with very quiet roads, so nice to have a little walk around when weather permits. It's very close to Lyme Regis and Seaton (10–12 minutes in opposite directions), so a great base for a holiday. Suggest the listing might be amended to make “three bedrooms, sleeps 6” clearer that it's a double, a single and a family room. (We had thought it was two doubles and a twin.) We also were surprised that no logs were provided as part of the booking. For a listing which has a log burner as such a prominent feature of the house, it was a real surprise that we didn’t know we had to source logs ourselves. Easy enough to get from Tesco in Seaton, but we'd have picked them up on the way. Everything was very clean, decorated very nicely, and the kitchen was pretty easy to use (but no basic consumables like cooking oil or salad dressing). Check in and check out was easy.

Hi Jessica Thank you for your review. I’m sorry that the bedrooms weren’t as you would have liked but the layout is actually very clear in the property details and even includes the size of the small single bed. As regards logs for the wood burner, it is not possible to provide these as I was unable to find a supplier for a starter pack for each booking. I have left a supply of logs for guests to use in the past but as we do not live locally this is not something I can guarantee. I’ve personally not stayed in a self catering holiday home where basic consumables have been provided. It would actually be impossible to monitor this. I do however provide a welcome pack which I trust you enjoyed. Property Owner

“Extremely comfortable, clean and well equipped.”

Our granddaughter loved all the toys in the cupboard. A welcome pack with tea, biscuits etc and some milk in the fridge was a nice touch. Highly recommended. Everything needed for your stay, even spare batteries

The property was the most thoughtfully furnished place I have ever stayed in with all of the equipment, crockery etc being extremely high quality & the owners have thought of everything you could possibly need during a stay- it was fabulous. “My sister and I stayed for a long weekend with our parents for Dads 86th birthday.”

We found this property one of the most well equipped we have ever stayed in. High quality furnishing and very comfortable beds. We all slept really well. Having the downstairs bedroom was great for our parents and the property really is a credit to the owners. The housekeepers do an excellent job and we really felt like it was a home from home. Highly recommend for a very relaxing getaway in the most stunning grounds of this beautiful estate. Definitely would return if we can another time.

“After staying there at Xmas and finding it a lovely place to stay ( except Bath leaking through kitchen ceiling repaired ok) we of course booked again but this time not so good windows in lounge very difficult to open or close.”

Dog hair on stairs.washing machine leaking underneath. Dishwasher very temperamental sometimes did not wash. I appreciate it’s had many visitors but compared to Xmas it was in need of a bit of a tidy up and tired looking . I regret having to raise these items because we love the property but I feel it needs attention. On a lighter note the addition of the Air Fryer is excellent. My wife is disabled and I have Parkinson’s disease and feel that a grab rail in the shower would be a great addition.

“Property is situated in a lovely, quiet estate for complete relaxation.”

Cottage is very comfortable and has everything you could possibly need. Noticed toys for children, games and a lovely bed for pets. Didn't have children, but noticed a travel cot and even baby sensor as I said all you need and more. A file with so much information of surrounding area to help with sightseeing. Perfect getaway.

“The heating was a disaster in the property with limited active times.”

Large vaulted ceilings with large ill fitting windows and cold flagstone floors without underfloor heating. Day time temperatures set at 19 degrees. When we arrived it was only just at 13 degrees after an hour. We purchased £33 of logs and kindling to try and get warmer but the wood burner was useless.

Apologies David, there had been a fault in an update to the remote control software that controls the heating. This was only discovered on the day so I asked Lyme Bay Holidays to go round and address immediately. Did you contact them to express your concerns? There are also full instructions in the property on how to turn this heating up, including how to raise the temperature on the timer. We find 19c comfortable ourselves. Lastly there are logs in the log store outside. The log burner is brand new and we find heats the room quickly. Property Owner

“It’s a lovely cottage and very well appointed.”

Everything you would want was in the kitchen and of a very high quality. The estate was a lovely place to stay and nice to walk around. We really enjoyed our stay. The downsides for us were the low beams which we were not aware of before arrival. There was no starter pack for the wood burner. We bought logs and kindling wood and left them behind. The front door had to be locked as the mechanism didn’t keep the door closed and it rattled in the wind. We would like to have been able to adjust the heating. It was cold in the main living area but very hot in the bedrooms. We did mention that the roof had a leak in very heavy rain.

Hi, thanks for your review. We hadn’t considered the beam downstairs to be low enough to be an issue as we are quite tall ourselves but will ask Lyme Bay to add to the property details. Similarly all radiators have individual thermostats which we had assumed people would adjust as needed, but we will add this to the instructions in the property. The thermostat is also on the kitchen worktop to adjust the temperature as required. Lyme Bay have checked for a leak but put it down to the direction of the wind and rain at the time, we will keep an eye on this, similarly with the door which we will check ourselves when we visit this week. There should be an initial supply of logs and kindling provided so we will follow this up. Property Owner

“Lovely property.”

Would be nice to have a proper shower up stairs not just a hand held one over the bath. Someone had parked a small silver car in the turning area, although a sign said no parking! Never moved all week , think it belonged to a resident of one of the other properties. Just made it difficult to manoeuvre onto the small drive way of the Engine House.

Everything spotless and cleaning products supplied. Torches provided. Plenty of space to walk the dog and bins provided around the estate. Only needed better directions to find cottage. Also height restriction in bathroom upstairs.
