“We had a wonderful family holiday.”

Eating our meals together around the wonderful old kitchen table. We had huge problems with the shower being cold and the smell of gas in the utility room. The maintenance guy did come out immediately and concluded that a plumber should be sent out. However, the following day the shower still didn’t work, so we are not sure if the plumber actually came, as we were out. The garden was really beautiful, or will be once this autumn sees a really good cut back. It’s been expertly planted to give colour all year but is now rather overgrown. The thatched cottage is ready for a makeover as everything is now looking very tired. Saying that, it’s still all very clean, well presented and in a fabulous location.

I am glad that you had a wonderful family holiday at Thatched Cottage. It is annoying that the boiler malfunctioned so recently after its annual service - the plumber did come and the boiler has been repaired. I am pleased that you notice that the garden is expertly planted - it is deliberately kept as a real cottage garden rather than a bland rental garden, but this does make it hard to keep in check during the busiest months of the year. The property was completely redecorated two years ago, so I am sorry that you feel it is looking tired. “The cottage was of good size, had enclosed garden and matched the description well.”

Period features with some modernisation. The beach could be walked in about 5 mins, and easy access to the countryside for dog walks. We were concerned that the on street parking actually has yellow lines though it is unclear if these are valid. The property was clean however the kitchen bin had not been fully emptied prior to our arrival, there wasn’t much in it but reeked of garlic so the first thing we had to do was put the bag out. The “Lyme bay holiday” branded sheets are perhaps polycotton? They certainly didn’t have a quality feel to them as one might expect, please ditch them and get something decent from somewhere like John Lewis with a good thread count. We were impressed with the response when we reported a faulty bed ( the slats had collapsed) but it was obvious the bed had failed before on at least one occasion and really needed replacing. The shower system could do with looking at, it would frequently go stone cold mid shower, sometimes not supplying hot water, which is a shame because it looked as if recently installed, perhaps it was something to do with summer and us not having heat on, of time of day and boiler settings - as a family on holiday near a beach it is obvious we need to shower at any time. Shame that thought hadn’t allowed a second shower in utility room when the building was last modified - we got away with it as there were only 4 but if 6 of us then a proper 2nd bathroom would have helped.

“Thatched cottage, Charmouth.”

This us a very warm and welcoming holiday cottage. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor space, meaning even with 6 people you can find a quiet corner. The kitchen is delightful and makes a lovely sociable space. Parking was fairly easy but there is no designated parking space. That said, we had no issues.

“Good location making it easy to walk to beach and cliffs.”

Spacious - plenty room for the four of us and dog. The utility room is huge and was very useful for drying coats, dog towels etc. as well as general storage if outdoor clothes and boots. Kitchen well stocked with pots & pans, cutlery etc. Sitting room was comfy with two sofas although they are getting a bit weary. TV is functional and able to sign in to own subscriptions although it was very small even for the size of the room. All three bedrooms were comfy and although no wardrobes there a is some hanging racks. Bathroom is nice size with separate bath and shower. Our only complaint is the shower hose and head in the cubicle which leaked like sieve resulting in pitiful pressure from the shower head itself. Throughout the property, the doors need some attention as they were very squeaky. Please note parking is in the street which can be very limited at weekends and during the evenings. Overall the property is comfortable and makes a good base to explore the Jurassic coast

“We really enjoyed our stay in Thatched Cottage, it was warm and cosy on arrival and was very well equipped, especially the kitchen.”

Overall it had everything you needed and although our stay was in November, the private garden looked amazing. The bedrooms were very comfortable with all the linen and towels clean and fresh. We would be happy to book again in the future.

“The cottage was ideally situated near the village of Charmouth, making the beach and walking easily accessible.”

The cottage was well stocked and all of the necessary crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils and provisions were excellent. A lovely welcome back of local goodies was an added bonus on arrival. Heating was efficient and the cottage was generally very comfortable. The only negative was the cleanliness of some of the areas; while the bathrooms were very clean, the hall floor was not, the kitchen sink was actually dirty and much of the crockery needed cleaning before use. Accepting that this may have been down to the previous occupants, a thorough checking of all the areas and all the crockery/utensils should have been undertaken. We left the property much cleaner than we found it! Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and wouldn't hesitate to consider another stay in Thatched Cottage

“We have used lyme bay holidays for a very long time, any problems they sort out quickly.”

Thatched cottage suits us and our little dog, here's it as a second home! The property could not do with revamping. The chairs in the conservatory need new cushioned seating ,very hard now. The grass needs to be cut and tidied too. It would help with clear up for dig owners. Lastly, the bin collection, the instructions need to be rewritten and occupants made aware a man has to come through the house to collect the bin every week. So needs access. Why it can't be collected from outside the property is odd.

“Well this cottage would not win any awards for cleanliness which was unacceptable despite the property being marketed beautifully.”

On arrival dirty walls, skirting boards, cobwebs, dust, dirty bannister, sofa cushions stained (dirt under the throw on the white sofa) and dirty pots and pans with food residue welded on. Dishwasher and kettle were completely covered in limescale therefore the filters seemingly need replacing as hardly anything came out clean. Really not happy and couldn't feel at home here for this reason. I refuse to strip beds too when checking out at 10am when I had to load the dishwasher on arrival to be able to use some clean crockery. The first glass my husband picked up for a glass of water was filthy. Striping beds is also not a part of my holiday or what I paid £1000 for. I'd seen the previous reviews and you would think the problems mentioned would have been rectified. Clearly not. So what is the point in asking for reviews if no action is taken. Check out is 10am and check in 4pm. That is 6 hours free between arrivals and departure for odd jobs/cleaning to take place.

Kitchen equipment needs updating or a thorough clean. Dishwasher needs a deep clean and maybe the filter replacing. Garden needs pruning back and maybe a new set of furniture - very wobbly table.

“We had a lovely stay at Thatched Cottage.”

It was a good size to accommodate our party of 4 adults, 2 children and 2 dogs. The welcome package of local goods was a lovely gift. It is a very steep walk back from the beach etc so not for the faint hearted! But Charmouth had everything we needed for a week… beach, pubs, fish & chip shop, bakery, playing fields and playground…. A great holiday for adults, kids and dogs!

The cottage is charming and very well equipped with everything you could possibly want or need and surprisingly spacious. Nicely decorated with Nick Botting paintings. Lovely little garden with a terrace ideal for morning coffee or sipping a g&t in the evening. We would have no hesitation in booking the cottage again.

“Nice cottage, although the road outside is very busy.”

The beds and pillows were very comfortable. The shower was small but adequate. The overall cleanliness wasn’t great. The crockery and cutlery were all good also the appliances however, the pots and pans were not clean and way past their best days! As this was a self catering holiday it is essential that cooking equipment is clean and useable. The bins were full on our arrival and we also had to clean the floors. The garden was good though and dog proof.

“We would like to say that the Thatched cottage is a charming and generally well appointed cottage - however it is completely blighted by the road - the traffic was constant, dangerous and fast driving past the property day and night, which meant relaxing in the lounge largely impossible and did not make for restful nights sleep, as both main bedrooms are on the road side.”

The garden was very overgrown - especially the lawn and garden furniture very shabby. Overall the cottage was clean and tidy. We had to request extra bin bags and both bulbs in the bathroom needed replacing.

“We had a lovely stay, house and garden very nice, parking was not a problem.”

Only issue and rethinking how to adjust it was putting purple bags into black seagull back not big enough and previous people contents which could probably could not be helped, hence the same problem for people staying after us. Also do not like having to take sheets of the bed, we are on holiday and that was exhausting then having a six hours drive home.

“We have had 3 holidays in thatched cottage.”

We've had to call out maintenance. To deal with a couple of problems..This time it was a hornet down the chimney one evening. Maintained came out next day and as usual got the job done, chimney sealed and the room cleaned of dust. Great team. I did clean down the doors and bannisters. But we are comfy there and hope to. Return again. Our little dog thinks it's home from home.

“Wow, what an amazing quirky cottage which had everything we needed for a perfect stay.”

From the awesome welcome pack to the lovely homely atmosphere you created, we felt right at home in Thatched Cottage. It catered for our every need for a delightful break for 2 adults (62 & 72) and a small dog. One small suggestion would be to have a couple of firmer pillows on some of the beds as we both struggle with soft ones. Thatched Cottage is set in a great location at the top of Charmouth with easy access down to the beach and also the local bus service if you didn’t want to use your car. Having sampled food from both pubs, goodies from the bakery and breakfast baps from the beachfront cafe, we were fuelled up to explore this gorgeous part of the Dorset coast. Thank you!

“Lovely cottage we would recommend staying here.”

Very spacious and nice enclosed private garden. It’s a shame the fire doesn’t work as that would make it much more cosy in the evening. Short walk to shops and the coast and easy drive to all the main areas. Lyme Regis is only down the road and has lots of facilities.

“Spent a wonderful 2 weeks at Thatched Cottage.”

The cottage provided everything that we needed. It was clean, tidy and homely. Only a 10 min walk to the beach at Charmouth although the walk back to the cottage was up a steep hill - something to consider before you book if you struggle with walking up hills! We definitely shed a few pounds pushing the buggy up the hill! We'd never been to Dorset before and were keen to explore the county - Charmouth was a great base from which to do this from.

“Generally the cottage needs some maintenance and a good spring clean.”

The garden grass needed cutting, the downstairs bathroom taps were really dirty at the base, the throw on tbe settee was a cheap baby blanket, dirty oven gloves. There was also no sun umbrella which is unusual. The road outside the property is busy with double decker buses and caravans driving past. It does dies down at night but starts up again early in the morning.

Thank you for this feedback - it is good to hear your thoughts. The taps are being changed - annoyingly the first order was faulty and we are awaiting their replacements. Our marvellous gardener comes every Saturday morning but she cannot cut the grass if it is wet, so in the summer months the grass can get long very quickly. We do have a number of cheap throws for the sofa we expect some people's dogs to lie on and I am sorry if you feel they should be better - I will have a look at alternatives. “We had the issue with the running tap that wasn't resolved by the time we left although the company were communicative about it.”

Other bits of maintenance are needed, the fridge leaks water on to the floor and the lights in the bathroom have a loose connection as kept going on and off. Outside the lawn had clearly not been cut for a few weeks. Nice cottage marred slightly by the above.

Jetzt weiss ich wie Engländer leben. Es hatte alles was braucht. Es ist alles älter als auf die Bilder. Wir haben den Wintergarten genossen. Der Wasser-Hahn in Bad war leider immer noch nicht repariert. Gemäss Rezension in Juni war es schon defekt. Unser Juli-Woche war regnerisch darum konnten wir den harten nicht geniessen. Sehr schöne Umgebungen mit viel zu tun.

Well provided for in terms of amenities. Garden had a sea view when it wasn't raining and the garden room was a lovely place to chill. Location was very convenient with short walk to the beach and into the village for the shops two pubs and really excellent chip shop. The parking outside the cottage wasn't difficult and the road was quiet at night

“The property is fantastic and very well equipped.”

A couple of things though we thought need looking at were: the toilet seat in the downstairs loo as it needs tightening and the handbasin taps in the bathroom currently need an extra quarter turn after thinking they were shut off, otherwise they were still running. Also I bought Scrabble and I hope you don't mind that we left it in the property as there were no games other than a pack of cards, and a puzzle, which we felt was unusual. And we only found the 2024 tide book on the penultimate day as it was tucked amongst the general books. Knowing it was available would have made things a tad easier. As I said though, fantastic house and garden. Would absolutely stay again!

We couldn't find instructions for either the cooker or the washing machine it would make things easier if these could be supplied.

“Lovely cottage with good quality furniture and equipment.”

Beds super comfy. Conservatory was lovely in the sunshine. Heating wasn't on when we arrived and on a cold weekend we had to keep boosting it manually. Given that it is dog friendly a couple of extra throws in the lounge would be welcome and reduce worry over white sofa!! Best welcome pack EVER!!!!

“We had a lovely stay at Thatched Cottage in Charmouth.”

Even though it was on the main road that runs through Charmouth it was very peaceful. The garden was nicely enclosed which is great for people with 'normal' dogs but if you have a dog like ours, who climbs like a cat, the raised area in the corner is a problem! It would have been nice to have mirrors in the bedrooms for hair drying etc. but overall everything was provided for. The downside for us was the rubbish collection. The rubbish from previous tenants was still in the seagull sack and the bin in the back yard. Overall we had a lovely stay and would recommend the cottage to family and friends.

“The Thatched Cottage is a lovely, clean and well maintained comfortable cottage, with a pretty and very sunny garden.”

The on street parking was never a problem for us all. Charmouth is a scenic and unspoilt little town. Dogs are allowed on the east side of the lovely beach all year which was a great bonus in September. The shops are good and the food in the Royal Oak pub was delicious. We can definitely recommend this lovely, spacious cottage with a delightful sun room overlooking the private garden. The only negative for us was that we did find the road at the front rather noisy and although it's only a short walk to the beach, pubs etc, the cottage is at the top of quite a steep hill on return! Thank you to the owner for a really fabulous holiday, the weather was fantastic and we appreciated our lovely welcome gifts. Charmouth is most definitely worth a visit.

The welcome gifts were a really pleasant surprise, Thank you. The house has been really thoughtfully presented, is well equipped and has a lot of character. The garden is a sun trap and a great place to hang out. Our only slight gripe was the mattress in the master bedroom dipped a bit in the middle, so might need replacing at some point.We had no issues with parking both our cars on the street outside the house. We had a great meal at the George in Chideock, The kids recommended the fish and chips from the village and the bakery was brilliant for fantastic bread, scones, crab sandwiches and pasties!

“We all had an enjoyable week staying at the property and appreciated the welcome gift bag!”

The conservatory and garden were well used and we even saw deer on the field behind the property. The beds were very comfy too. Mirrors in the bedrooms are greatly needed!!! We had no way of drying/styling our hair in view, this was a problem with two teenager daughters and two other women in the group. Another must is hanging rails for clothes, none of us ended up unpacking our clothes properly as there were only coat hooks and hàngers in the rooms which seemed a bit too basic to be honest. There were also quite a few moths which might need looking into. Overall Thatched Cottage was a clean and well stocked for cleaning products etc cottage and the kitchen had all the things we needed and more making it very comfortable.

The property

Thatched Cottage has a great deal of period charm, with a beautiful, secluded garden, it sits on a village road within a short walk of both the sea and local amenities. It is a Grade II listed three-bedroomed house sleeping up to six guests. Located in the coastal village of Charmouth, the property is ideally situated for those looking for a holiday on the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast. The house has a comfortable sitting room to the front of the property. The kitchen has a farmhouse style to it with its Welsh dresser and views across the garden to the field beyond. The farmhouse type table and chairs are welcoming and make for a relaxing space for the family to enjoy their meals together, whilst the fitted kitchen and appliances lend it a modernity. A utility / cloakroom on the ground floor is particularly useful when coming in from the beach. The staircase leads to a half landing where you will find the delightful conservatory, allowing you to sit quietly with your morning cup of tea or evening drink, looking out onto the pretty cottage garden and hillside beyond. The family bathroom with its roll-top bath and separate shower is also on this floor. Continue up the stairs to reach the three bedrooms: to the front of the house a king-size bedroom and a double bedroom, both of which enjoy views of the rural Dorset countryside. You can look across the roof tops to the rural countryside. The twin bedroom, at the rear of the house, has an intriguing stable door and looks out over the garden. The garden of Thatched Cottage is a real delight with its lawn, mature planting and shrubs that include roses, hydrangeas and honeysuckle.
