Lyme Regis is, truly, a terrific place to take a holiday.

With its golden beaches within easy reach, superb restaurants around every corner, the Jurassic Coast at your doorstep and a world of active opportunities, it’s possible to lose weeks at a time discovering all it has to offer.

With that said though, we know our customers love to explore the delights of Lyme Bay’ surrounding area, but often don’t know where to start. That’s why we’ve drawn up a list of amazing day trips you can get to within an hour from your Lyme Regis Cottage. Here are a few of our suggestions:

Weymouth is just a 50-minute drive from Lyme Regis and is another delightful coastal town with sandy shores, brightly coloured beachside properties and a harbour that’s famous the world over. Whilst you’re there, check out Nothe Fort, an old English defence turned museum and Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens, which features delightfully manicured and curated gardens with rare and unusual plants.

Oh, and there’s a boatload of exciting new restaurants to dine in too!

Montacute House

Found just 45 minutes north of Lyme Regis, Montacute House is a masterpiece of Elizabethan Renaissance architecture and design, with its remarkable towering glass windows, imposing structure and surrounding gardens.

A real gem in the National Trust collection of properties, Montacute House offers delightful walks, historical intrigue, amazing portraits and even a place to rest your weary bones and enjoy a nice cup of coffee.

Nestled between the Blackdown Hills and the Quantock Hills (two designated Areas of Outstanding Beauty) is Taunton, a delightful town which plays host to The Museum of Somerset, beautiful horse trekking trails and even tree-top adventures at Vivary Adventure Centre.

It’s a delightful and historic town that’s absolutely worth a visit, especially when you’re just an hour away from your Lyme Regis cottage.

For a glimpse into the past, you won’t regret making the short trip over to Branscombe, just 20 minutes away in the car.

Tucked away in a valley which runs down to a spectacular beach, this ancient village is home to buildings which are still fully operational, like the Mill, which is still powered by the waters which run through the town, and in invite guests every day. You’ll also find the fully functional Manor Mill, the Old Bakery (complete with a thatched roof) and the Forge, built around 1580 and still working today!

Want a break from the thrills of the seaside? Just 55 minutes west of Lyme Regis is Exeter, an ancient walled city that’s played host to some of the most dramatic moments in British history.

Today you’ll find world-class museums, restaurants, architecture and amazing activities. Whether you’re checking out Exeter’s dramatic cathedral, spending a day in Crealy Great Adventure Park, enjoying the nightlife or simply taking a tour of the city’s historical sites, taking a day out in Exeter is highly recommended for all our guests.
