“We have stayed in Cornerside before and it's a great house and not too far from shops and the beach.”

This time we had a problem with a rodent in the front bedroom, it could be heard from the lounge down stairs and woke the family up early hours of the morning, from then on that room was not slept in. To sum up I could not say it's a good review this year, due to rodent.

“6 of us had a wonderful stay at Cornerside.”

We had to call as there wasn’t enough bedding but we got through straightaway and with help located the spare linen. There’s everything you might need in the kitchen and the reception rooms were comfortable. We had great weather and really appreciated the outside space…and the umbrella! We had 3 cars and parking wasn’t an issue. We enjoyed ourselves so much we booked again for next and for a longer stay

I apoligise again that the linen wasn't provided for the trundle bed; as I said to you on the call, the gite manager must have assumed that the double bed was being occupied by 2 people so we need to make sure that the sleeping arrangements are communicated to Sykes on booking in the future. “The property itself was clean and in a great location.”

However we felt that some of the furnishings and kitchen equipment could do with updating. Also there were no spare toilet rolls available at the property, two rolls for five people over a long weekend is not enough. Also there was no shower gel or shampoo and no welcome pack of milk and water etc in the fridge. I'm not sure if this is Sykes policy but other companies usually provide these things.

Thank you for taking your time to review our holiday home, we are glad you enjoyed your stay and appreciated the location in Sidmouth. As the property is a self catering holiday home, guests are expected to supply their own consumables, we do, however, ask our house keeper to ensure that hand soap and toilet rolls are provided for the guests convenience at the start of their stay, likewise we supply a limited amount of tea, coffee and welcome pack with biscuits and speciality teas, coffee and hot chocolate. With regards to the furnishings and kitchen equipment, I am a little confused by your comment as the entire property was fully, and sympathetically renovated in 2023, at which point it was fully re-furnished with the exception of the washing machine in the utility as it was in a fully functional state. “We booked ‘Cornerside’ last minute (3 adults and 2 children) to spend a couple of days with parents who moved to Sidmouth several months ago, they had no spare room for us so we were really pleased to find this house available!”

It was clean, modern, cosy and even decorated for Christmas. We had a great stay here, parking was a blessing, and instructions were very clear. We would 100% stay again, the volunteer pub at the end of the road is also a benefit!

“Our family group of 7 enjoyed a very comfortable stay at Cornerside during the recent October half term holiday.”

The property is very well equipped and all the facilities described on Sykes website were accurate. The parking space, whilst quite tight, was very useful and we were able to park the second car in front of the of the driveway so we were always able to park easily. Overall a lovely place to stay when visiting Sidmouth!

“Cottage was furnished really well and had everything we could need and the location was good.”

Unfortunately we were unable to use the shower in the main bathroom as the water was scalding hot and wouldn’t turn down. It was dangerously hot and would cause concern for anyone with children staying at the property. We reported the issue but no action was taken. Also we accidentally left some keys behind and I contacted the owner immediately offering to pay for recorded delivery postage if they could be retuned to us. Two weeks later and we are still waiting for the keys or proof of postage. These are my son’s car and house key so we are very disappointed they haven’t been returned yet.

Thank you for your review Alison. Apologies for the late reply, we are only just able to respond due to Sykes website restriction. We are pleased that you found Cornerside provided everything you needed for a comfortable stay. Upon you contacting us on a Saturday morning to report that the toilet flush handle has snapped, we managed to get a plumber around to you on the same day and he was advised to check the shower issue, as you reported operational difficulties. The new part could not be obtained until first thing Monday morning at which point the repair was carried out, however, the plumber failed to find any issue with the shower having managed to control it sufficiently. I therefore do not understand why you have stated that no action was taken when the plumber attended within hours of you reporting it. Regarding the keys, our cleaner did find them and kindly offered to post them back to you, which unfortunately took a couple of days due to her work load but you are now in receipt of them and our cleaner personally absorbed the cost of the postage. Given the above, your score is most disappointing Regards, Lucy Property Owner

“Corner side is a lovely house it is well decorated with complimenting furnishings and nice pieces of art throughout.”

The beds are really comfy. We found the day room very handy for relaxing and made good use of the extra shower. The kitchen is well equipped and is light and bright. We did find the lounge furniture a bit lacking in that the leather sofa and chair are quite slippy and not overly comfortable but apart from that we really liked the house and would definitely stay again as it is in a lovely position very close to the Byes. Unfortunately we couldn't use the parking space as it wasn't accessible for our Skoda Kodiak.

Regarding the parking space, I think it is a matter of confidence and of course in our case, regular practice, as we do manage to park our VW Camper Van in there. However, thankfully as we have a private drive and a chain indicating access is required, nobody parks over our driveway leaving the kerbside free for our use if you are struggling, find it easier or have two vehicles. Beautiful house well maintained. Description was accurate. The Parking space was too small to get our Astra in but at least with the sign up we had reserved roadside parking. Would recommend. Everything thought of that we needed. Would recommend and would return

“The house was very convenient, warm, well maintained and clean.”

The parking space is fine for a medium sized car. You could have a good break here without a car. We got the bus into Exeter on one day and used the local swimming baths when it was rainy. You can walk up to Mutters Moor from the road.

“We enjoyed our stay at Cornerside.”

Lovely Kitchen, nice comfy beds and nicely decorated. Just a couple of minor issues, downstairs toilet basin tap had a very slow feed. Garden table and chairs were dusty and full of cobwebs. There could have been a better personal touch like some of the other properties where we have stayed e.g. A pint of milk in the fridge, perhaps a small cake etc. There were some coffee sachets and peppermint tea bags but no ordinary tea bags.

We take your point regarding the garden furniture and we will request that the cleanliness is checked on changeover now the season is in full swing. We aim to leave various items for guests including mint tea, hot chocolate, decaf coffee and a selection of border biscuits, and there should always be sufficient tea bags, sugar and coffee to start each guest off on their first day or two. We do not supply milk as there are so many different varieties, preferences and allergies. I apologise if your selection of items had not been restocked on this occassion. “Great holiday home!”

Just a few small sugestions: Maybe a rollar blind above the door of the daybed room could help to block out the light from the kitchen at night and give a bit more privacy? We arranged a delivery from Waitrose and discovered that the front doorbell didn't work. We tried to sort out the clock in the kitchen but could not find any triple A batteries. We had a lovely time at your holiday home - thank you.

“Lovely house, tastefully decorated well equipped and great Wi-Fi.”

2 notes- person staying in snug room by kitchen thought a solid door as opposed to a glass one would be nice due to lights in the kitchen etc. Also as we had children with us a small set of more child friendly crockery (maybe the bamboo sets). Just to save the nice crockery set from the children really. Enjoyed the house very much and would be happy to recommend to family and friends and more than happy to stay again.

“A typical Victorian/Edwardian house, large rooms but the main living room was dark.”

However the lovely day room at the back of the house received lots of sun and had a view of the colourful garden and neighbouring trees. Congratulations to your cleaning team, it really was clean, no half hidden rubbish anywhere. Quiet area and parking no problem. Recently fitted kitchen but could do with some more items - only 3 large stew/sauce pans made cooking for just 2 of us a challenge. Tiny oven gloves not big enough to hold a hot jacket potato. These minor things aside we enjoyed our stay there and also the nearby walk to the town centre through The Byes and ofcourse the town itself.

“The house is really lovely and comfortable.”

The only things I would add would be: Higher stools in the kitchen, maybe bar stools. Larger bath towels. A new washing machine. The rest is perfect, especially the day-room.

We are aware that the kitchen chairs are a little low to the table, however, the height of the table/breakfast bar is determined by the radiator, on the other hand, sadly bar stools would be too high. We may need to consider some bespoke chairs. The towels are Bath towels and not bath sheets so as to keep down laundry costs as when the house is in full occupancy it would require additional uses of the washing machine. I hope that helps explain. Regarding the washing machine, we have had no reports of it not working, I hope you didn't experience problems with it, please advise if you did as clearly that is not acceptable. I am glad you enjoyed your stay and were largely satisfied with the property. Property Owner

Thank you for your review and kind comments. Cornerside has recently been fully renovated and as such we are pleased to hear that guests are appreciating the standard of décor and comfort. Regarding the guest folder, I have spoken to the caretaking team and have been advised that the folder is 'always' left on the coffee table in addition to a welcome pack of biscuits, teas, coffee's and hot chocolate being left in the kitchen, I can only assume this was an oversight on this occasion for which I apologise but thank you for bringing it to my attention.
