“What a find - a cosy, clean cottage with parking AND an enclosed garden for the dog.”

Just marvellous. Arriving late-ish on a bank holiday Monday, we really appreciated the pint of milk in the fridge. Thank you! Every little detail had been considered in terms of what we would need. Everything seemed quite new and well maintained and a huge amount of effort had been put into the information in the cottage about things to do, even including the OS map of the local area which was great. There are games and books for children and even a fossil hunting kit. I started reading one of the books and got so into it I have had to order my own copy so that I can finish it! Just a few things… The grass needs cutting - we had a look around for the mower as my partner loves to mow (I know…) but couldn’t find one. The TV occasionally refuses to show live TV. This is fixed by going into the settings and doing a full restart (just switching on and off doesn’t work). I am a very light sleeper and would have appreciated a proper curtain (blackout?) instead of just a blind in the bedroom as the sunlight streams in from very early. Other light sleepers might want to be aware that the main bedroom is on the road and the property is on the main road through Charmouth. The listing said that we had to take our own tea towels, which we did, but these were actually provided. It didn’t mention dishwasher tablets and these were not actually provided.

Thank you for your kind words. We’re glad you enjoyed staying in our cottage and appreciated the information we’ve gathered for our guests. We have cut the grass and will look into getting some black out curtains. Apologies about the dishwasher tablets. There should be some available. I shall speak to Lyme Bay Holidays about this. Thanks for choosing Charleston Cottage! Property Owner

The property

Charleston Cottage is a delightful period property situated in the coastal village of Charmouth in Dorset, on the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast. Believed to date back to the 1800s and once forming part of an old coaching Inn, this property has been sympathetically converted into a spacious two-bedroom holiday home retaining many character features. Ideal for couples, families, and friends, this pet-friendly property is just a short walk from the beach and local amenities and is perfect for enjoying a seaside break at any time of the year. Step inside to the bright and spacious living room with high ceilings and a Victorian fireplace. Sumptuous sofas provide the ideal spot to sit back and relax with the electric flame effect fire giving the room a cosy feel during the cooler times. Glazed double doors lead to the adjoining kitchen, which is perfectly equipped for a self-catering holiday, whether creating hearty breakfasts or a tasty evening meal which can be enjoyed together around the dining table. At the rear of the cottage there is a handy lobby with skylight, housing the washing machine and leading to the rear garden. The family bathroom is also located on this floor. Heading upstairs, you will find the two bedrooms. The double bedroom at the front of the cottage has a handy ensuite shower room, with the bunk bedroom at the rear enjoying views over the Marshwood Vale. Outside, the enclosed garden is arranged on two levels with a patio area and seating immediately outside the back door. Steps lead down to the lawn with a path taking you to the garden gate and the rear car parking area, which is accessed via a coaching arch from The Street. Regarding the area, Charmouth has a lot to offer, from relaxing at the beach to enjoying one of the many coastal walks including the renowned South West Coastal Path and Golden Cap. Dogs are welcome on parts of the beach all year round. At the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, you can learn about the area's rich geology and get up close to Attenborough’s Sea Dragon and other fossil exhibits before perhaps joining one of the guided fossil walks to find your own fossils on the shore. The local shops and eateries are within easy walking distance and include Charmouth Bakery, renowned locally for its fresh bread and pastries, as well as two village convenience stores for your everyday essentials. For times when you prefer not to cook, Charmouth has two popular village pubs serving local food and beverages, and no trip to the seaside is complete without tucking into some freshly cooked fish and chips. With good bus and road links, you can easily explore the surrounding area, with a bus stop conveniently located opposite the cottage. Head into the neighbouring town of Lyme Regis with its iconic Cobb harbour and popular visitor attractions such as the Marine Aquarium and The Town Mill. A family favourite is the Axe Valley Animal Park, located in the Axe Valley just outside Axminster; this compact zoo is home to a variety of animals from around the world, from antelopes to zebra. Other popular days out include Seaton with its heritage tram rides, Pecorama in Beer or the Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth. Enjoy an escape to Dorset with a memorable stay at Charleston Cottage.
