Holidaying with your kids is amongst the most joyous experiences you can have in life. We’re based in Lyme Regis and, when it comes to family holidays, we like to think that we’re perfectly located. Superbly positioned on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast and with oodles of classic British seaside charm, Lyme Regis has been a popular holiday destination for hundreds of years.

But whilst the weather might be glorious at present, we all know how the British weather can be. As such, long, lazy days at the beach aren’t always the most realistic prospect. Thankfully though, there’s much more to Lyme Regis than its internationally recognised beaches.

In fact, for those with an interest in expanding their intellectual horizons (in a very fun way, we should add), Lyme Regis offers a host of amazing indoor experiences that shouldn’t be missed. We speak, of course, about Lyme Regis’ museums.

Lyme Regis Museum

Fresh from its expansion last year, Lyme Regis Museum is bigger and better than ever before. Standing in the heart of the town, the museum was built on the site of Mary Anning’s home – a vital figure in the history of both palaeontology and geology, as she found discovered and catalogued many of the early fossil finds.

Today, her legacy is remembered in the museum which features everything from the incredible fossils she unearthed to information about early Lyme Regis, Lyme’s literary links to Jane Austen and John Fowles and much, much more.

Sir David Attenborough himself described it as nothing less than a “delightful and remarkable museum, a jewel”, and who are we to argue? Best of all, they also run regular guided trips out to the beach to hunt for fossils!

Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium

The Cobb in Lyme Regis has always been one of the most important tourist destinations in Lyme Regis, and for good reason too, but not just something to look at, as it’s also home to Lyme Regis Marine Museum.

This traditional, family-run museum offers visitors an exciting insight into the sea creatures which are found in the local waters of Lyme Regis, with opportunities for hands-on interaction and so much to see and do, you’ll have a blast – whatever the weather.

Dinosaurland Fossil Museum

You might well have surmised that dinosaurs are a big deal in Lyme Regis, an observation that’s confirmed by the sheer number of businesses and attractions which have sprung up around the fact that Lyme Regis was once the centre of the paleontological world.

It’s also why the Dinosaurland Fossil Museum is such a popular attraction within the town. This traditional museum is housed within a stunning Grade 1 listed building and features over 12,000 permanent fossils on display and a host of educational zones, you and the kids will learn the history of the earth via the creatures that used to walk it.
