    “Fig Tree House was a great base for exploring the local area.”

    The house is spacious, the beds were comfortable, the bathrooms were clean, and the enclosed garden was perfect for our dog to relax in the sun. We had a very enjoyable and relaxing stay and would happily choose to stay here again if we were visiting the area. A couple of things future guests may find helpful to know. The railway line and a stream run along the bottom of the garden. Trains start early, around 5:30am, and continue until late into the night, with one train per hour in each ...

    The house is spacious, the beds were comfortable, the bathrooms were clean, and the enclosed garden was perfect for our dog to relax in the sun. We had a very enjoyable and relaxing stay and would happily choose to stay here again if we were visiting the area. A couple of things future guests may find helpful to know. The railway line and a stream run along the bottom of the garden. Trains start early, around 5:30am, and continue until late into the night, with one train per hour in each direction. It wasn’t a problem for us, but light sleepers may want to bring earplugs or use white noise. This seems to be or have been a lived-in home rather than a typical holiday let, which gives it character but means it doesn’t have quite the same setup as some holiday properties - plenty of kitchen equipment (did not use oven or microwave oven). A cleaning pack was provided, but there were no complimentary tea, coffee, milk or sugar or supplies on arrival (I left some sugar for future guests!). However, there is a Tesco less than a five-minute walk away, making it easy to pick up essentials. Parking outside the property is a little tight, so confident reversing and manoeuvring are needed. Axminster itself is a lovely town with a good selection of pubs and takeaways. I’d particularly recommend Belluno, the Railway Kitchen at the station for breakfast (it’s easiest to walk as station parking is charged all day rate) and the Community Waffle House. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the area and it was a great base to do so!

Fig Tree House is a spacious three-bedroom home situated in the market town of Axminster, Devon and within easy reach of Lyme Regis and the Jurassic coast. Conveniently located near the train station and the London to Exeter train line, this property is a great choice for those wanting a car free escape and, with regular buses running to the coast, this makes a wonderful base to explore popular fossil hunting beaches and coastal footpaths, while offering all you could need to enjoy a self-catering stay with your family or friends. With accommodation thoughtfully arranged over three floors, Fig Tree House has a large and fashionably open plan living area on the first floor complete with bi-fold doors opening on to a balcony. Open the doors to extend the living space and let the outside in, creating the perfect spot to sit with a chilled glass of wine looking out onto the garden. A sociable room the well-equipped kitchen area allows you to cook meals with ease which can be enjoyed sat together around the dining table before retreating to the comfortable sitting area. When night-time calls, the first of the bedrooms, a spacious king-size room, is located on the ground floor, with an en-suite shower room with walk-in body jet shower. Head up to the top floor where you will find the other two bedrooms. The super king room is an impressive room with vaulted ceilings, large windows and a Juliette balcony. This too has an en-suite shower room with walk-in body jet shower. The third bedroom, a twin room, can be made up as a super-king on request, so offers flexible sleeping options with the family bathroom conveniently located next to it. Axminster is a market town located in Devon and bordering the counties of Dorset and Somerset, making it a great choice for getting out and about. The town, which has a heritage of carpet making, offers a choice of eateries and local pubs as well as the convenience of supermarkets for stocking up on your holiday essentials. Millers Farm Shop in neighbouring Kilmington is only a short drive away and sells a wide choice of local produce and fresh meats, with the on-site restaurant a popular spot to stop for a bite to eat. Other popular eateries in the area include River Cottage HQ, known for its TV show and locally sourced and showcased food, or The Tytherleigh Arms for those looking for delicious food in a casual and inviting setting. Located in an area popular with walkers and cyclists, head out and take a stroll along the River Axe or to one of the many walks or cycle routes within the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Just a short drive or bus ride will take you to the picturesque seaside town of Lyme Regis with its family-friendly beaches and the iconic Cobb Harbour. Other popular days out include Charmouth with its Heritage Centre, where you can learn about the Jurassic Coast and the area's rich geology, joining one of the guided fossil walks and trying your hand at finding your very own ammonites.
