“Lavender Cottage is situated on a steep lane in the centre of Lyme Regis.”

Car access is not possible even for unloading. However, a car is not essential. The bus from Axminster Station stops near the top of the lane. There are bus services to Bridport, West Bay, and Seaton. We walked from Lyme Regis to West Bay along the Southwest Coastal Path (which runs through Lyme Regis) and caught buses back. There are other walks that can be done without a car. Tesco is only a few hundred yards away on the main street. The cottage needs up to date instructions on how to use the central heating. As noted in a previous review, the mattress in the first-floor bedroom is past its best. The sofa in the living room is also past its best and could be replaced or at least cleaned. There is only one shower. The kitchen is well-equipped but working surface area very small. For us, it doesn’t score as well as other Sykes Cottages. Most now provide a “welcome pack” of a carton of milk and some teabags and /or coffee and biscuits – nice to have on arrival. Some even provide a bottle of wine. Most provide consumables such as washing up liquid. We thank the Sykes out-of-ours service for prompt responses. We had to call them twice, once after the gas supply went off, and again when there was water dripping from the kitchen ceiling. The water leak happened from an over-flowing toilet cistern after the water supply was restored with a surge after the supply to much of the old town failed after a mains pipe burst. The museum is good and we enjoyed a guided tour of the town.
