South West Deer Rescue, Crewkerne
Just 8 miles from Wootton Fitzpaine a chance to visit the wild and semi-wild deer whose ancestors may very well have roamed the grounds at the Manor House. The Deer Rescue centre is a non-profit centre where families can get up close and personal with 5 different species of deer. This is a day trip that will really appeal to any nature lovers as the deer are not the only residents on the 100 acre site. Other inhabitants of this section of countryside are badgers, Buzzards, Owls and fabulous red foxes. Lucky visitors have been known to see some of these other animals from inside the hide to the side of the hill. Make sure to wrap up warm when visiting as the park is open to the elements.
Golden Cap Estate
Grab the dog and the kids and head off to the wonderful coastal and countryside surrounded Golden Cap Estate. You’ll feel the burn when you climb to the highest point of the South Coast but the view that greets you will more than make up for it.

Charmouth Fish Bar, Charmouth
A short drive into Charmouth will open up the dinner variety considerably. If you’re after a quick dinner Charmouth Fish Bar is a popular little restaurant and takeaway that offers up a huge menu from ‘finest sustainable fish’ to pizza, pasties and burgers. The service is highly rated too.
The Station Kitchen by Sausage & Bear, West Bay Bridport
For an upmarket evening without the kids take a drive, or taxi, into Bridport to the modern vintage Station Kitchen. The restaurant invites you to ‘travel through the tastes of time’ with its menu comprising of fresh fish, goods from the grill, and wonderful alternative vegetarian options. The cheese board is bursting with West Country cheeses begging to be crackered before indulging in a nightcap.
Symondsbury Kitchen, Symondsbury
The perfect spot for a lunch! With views over the Manor Yard diners can enjoy breakfast, lunch or tea and cake in the café or on the terrace. The daily menu is always freshly prepared, seasonally sensitive and locally sourced wherever possible. A specials board provides daily changing gluten free options and vegetarian dishes.
Champerhays Wood and Wootton Fitzpaine
Definitely not a walk for the faint hearted, this route leads over stream bridges, along stream beds and a multitude of ascents. Starting at the car park at Champerhays Wood head towards Fishpond bottom, up and into the beech woods before descending onto the main forest track. Onwards and upwards, over hill and vale until you pass through Wootton Manors East Lodge and on to the village itself. If you’re feeling brave you can reverse your steps and make your way back to the car park starting point.
